Can a Federal Employee Choose Their Own Doctor?
In most cases, yes. Under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act you may choose your own treating physician for a work-related injury, and you are not limited to a provider selected by your agency or by the Department of Labor. The choice is yours, but it is not unlimited. OWCP can require a change of physician or direct a second opinion in defined circumstances.
Request a Consultation
The short answer
You choose your treating physician. Your employing agency does not choose for you, and you do not need an approved list to see the physician you select. Whether treatment is authorized and paid for is a separate question from who you are allowed to see.
How the choice works in practice
- Ask whether the practice treats federal workers' compensation patients and understands OWCP documentation
- Confirm the provider will document diagnosis, causal relationship, restrictions, and work status
- Make sure the office has your claim number and any correspondence you have received
- Keep copies of everything you and your physician submit
- Expect to sign an authorization before records are released
When OWCP can direct care
The choice of physician is yours, but OWCP retains authority over the claim. It may require a change of physician in specific circumstances, direct a second opinion examination, or ask for clarification of a treating physician's opinion. Those decisions follow rules set by the Department of Labor and are made case by case.
What does not change
- Your physician does not decide whether your claim is accepted
- Your physician does not authorize payment or benefits
- Your agency does not select or veto your treating physician
- Claim decisions remain with the U.S. Department of Labor
Where Pinpoint Medical fits
Pinpoint Medical is a privately owned practice in Greater Houston that evaluates and treats injured federal employees. Its clinicians document examination findings, functional limitations, and work status for the DOL process. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Department of Labor or OWCP, and choosing Pinpoint is the patient's decision, not a requirement of any claim process.
